I have seen this question pop up often on Twitter and social media that relates to writing in general so I thought: why not give you my answer on your favourite blog of all time(this blog if you were confused)?
I write because for a few hours I can escape from my mundane reality and enter, create and explore a world that is completely my own. I can interact with characters and beings of my own design and just for a moment lose myself within this, become a part of this new and exciting realm of fantasy/horror/romance etc.
I write because I am able to tell stories completely different from anyone else. We all have our own unique voices and so even though I might be writing in a genre that millions of others are writing in I know that my story, and every other story, will be different.
I write to entertain others. I want to write a story that draws the readers in as it did with me, for you, the reader, to become sucked into my world and live in it fully.
Yes, I also write to one day make a career out of it (as I’m sure you do as well). However there is no purpose in writing for others just to score a few 100 bucks if it’s not something you love. I write first and foremost for myself, I write because I love it, it’s my passion and when you have passion there’s nothing you cannot achieve.

Well, of course like most writers I’d love to be published one day. More actually for the fact that it would mean I’ve achieved something in life, rather than for anything monetary. To see my book(s) on a shelf, or in a bookstore, would give me huge pleasure. To know that something I’ve created would outlive me.
Mostly though, the actual writing for me is kind of a compulsion. There’s a story I NEED to tell. I need to get it out of my head. If that makes sense! 🙂

While I, like most writers, dream of getting published one day and earning some money from the venture, for me I have two more important reasons!
Firstly, I want to feel like I’ve achieved something. I want to see my books out there being (hopefully) enjoyed. I want to see them on bookshelves, in bookstores. I want to know I accomplished something in life that will put live me.
Secondly, writing is kind of a compulsion. From the moment I had the idea for ‘Songbird’, I NEEDED to get it out of my head. To tell the story. The saga.
Does that make sense? 😃
